Picking a Home Alarm System
There are so many choices available when it comes to finding the right security alarm system for your home. How will you know which is right for you, and what to look for in them?
The best thing is to start with educating yourself on what alarm companies have to offer. There are a few small things that help deter break-ins, including a simple sign or sticker on your property or window, however, there might be a more effective means if you are looking to get a discount on your insurance policy.
In general, the advantages that most people find with having a home security alarm system is the overall financial savings they are able to make. Simply informing your insurance company of your security system can save you anywhere from 5% to 20% depending on the company you are with and their discount offers. If you have the security system that is hooked up and monitored by the security company, and it has both fire and burglar alarm systems, insurance is often lowered by around 15% to 20%.
there are a whole host of options that security companies can offer- fire, burglar, medical, carbon monoxide alarm systems, it’s all about finding what your risks are, and what is right for you and your family.
When you break it down, there are essentially two types of security systems available. The first is monitored. This means that the security system is hooked up to the company that monitors it, and will contact the dwelling via the telephone when it goes off. It will then contact the police or fire department, or whoever else seems fit for the emergency. The emergency crews are sent directly to your home by the monitoring company. For many, this seems like the ultimate in protection, because if an alarm goes off, and no one answers the phone, emergencies crews arrive automatically. However, there are some drawbacks to this system.
The monitoring company will contact emergency crews through whatever phone line you have, and this leaves the home owner unable to make calls at the same time. You would either need a second line or a mobile phone to call for more help. For example, if the home is being broken into, and the thief cuts the phone line, then the entire monitoring system is out of use. Also, in the cases of false alarms, emergency crews will usually send out a bill and charge for the time lost.
There are monitoring companies which will sell systems, but they do not do any actual monitoring. They may be contracting the monitoring out to another company, who specializes in it. The best way to be sure that you have found a secure monitoring company is to find out if they have an Underwriters Lab rating. This way, you can be sure they are secure and a safe company to go with.
Unmonitored systems are those which are just the opposite; they also have some pros and cons with them. These are the alarm systems that have loud alarm ringing and flashing lights that go off when the system has been breached. The idea with this is to A- scare off the any burglars, and B- to have the neighbors become aware of the situation and call for emergency help. The disadvantage of this is that you are relying on your neighbors for your security, and they might not always be available to help. They might not be home, or simply may not be very good in emergencies and unsure of what to do at all. A great way to overcome this is to contact some kind of a neighborhood watch program and have community events and socials with your neighbors so that you become more diligent about looking out for the safety of people who live around you.
The alarm system is a great way to ensure you are confident and comfortable with leaving home and knowing that it is secure and looked after. Being able to trust and have confidence in your neighbors is also a big part of knowing your home is in good hands. To find out if your company offers any kind of discount for homes with security systems, you can contact your insurance company directly and this might help in your decision making process if you are considering a monitored or unmonitored security system.
The benefit of a security system can be two fold, giving you not only the peace of mind and confidence of a secure and safe home, but also having the financial benefit through discounts on the long list of bills you pay for your home.
