This independent Blue Shield Company was originally founded as California Physician's Service, or the CPS, in 1938. The CPS became a public company in 1940, and offered pre-paid plans for health care to California residents. There was overwhelming success in their first year, with 20,000 new members, and an army of 5000 physicians agreed to become a part of the network. Over the years, the CPS changed and evolved to its members needs, and began offering catastrophic coverage, Medicare plans, life insurance, vision care, and nursing home care. In 1959, the CPS officially became the Blue Shield of California Insurance Company. Today, the company is among the largest and most comprehensive health care insurance companies in the state of California. The company headquarters are located in San Francisco.
