Blue Cross of Idaho History
In 1945 the company was founded, and was known at the time as the Idaho Hospital Service. They primarily specialized in providing a service which was pre-paid care for businesses and employees, usually for the mining operations that were ongoing. The success of the company was obvious, as they enrolled 10,000 members the first year and an additional 35,000 members in the second year. A few years later, the company decided to open up their business to individuals, and the plans expanded to cover other medical expenses, including tests, accident insurance, and other outpatient services. It was in 1973 when the Idaho Hospital Service became what we now know as the Blue Cross of Idaho. The headquarters are now located in Meridian.
Helping the Community
The Blue Cross of Idaho also works as a responsible citizen, being involved in as many community events as they can by volunteering time, and making financial donations to help improve the lives of the residents of Idaho.
The Blue Cross of Idaho has been involved with:
- The United Way: donations have been made that totaled as much as $96,000 dollars in one year, by the employees of Blue Cross.
- Boys and Girls Club: The child and youth organization has been given health education and preventative care solutions for the kids who attend, and their future success.
- Partners in Education: this is a program which is focused on helping with children's education. Employees of Blue Cross Blue Shield volunteer their time, spending it with children and their school activities.
The Blue Cross of Idaho developed a foundation in 2001 called the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health. It began to help promote healthy living in the community, and to help with problem solving for health issues the community faces. Some of the components include an anti-smoking program, as well as a program to fight against childhood obesity, by partnering up with the YMCA for Idaho's Active America.
