These two then merged in 1966 and become the Blue Shield Blue Cross of Georgia/ Columbus.
Almost 20 years later, the companies, Atlanta Blue Cross Plan and the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia/ Columbus, which had been independent of each other, merged, in 1985, and again altering their name to become known as the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia, which today, is based out of Atlanta. The company continues to operate independently but as a member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, which is a family of a few dozen independent companies across the USA.
