PPO Dental Insurance

PPO dental insurance plans, which are also referred to as dental provider preferred organizations, or also known as DPPOs, are the most used insurance option. This is because they have a kind of flexibility that insured persons to choose their service provider (to choose their own dentists and specialists). These insurance plans are also considered by many to provide better service to their customers and to have lower limits than one would encounter with a traditional HMO dental insurance plan. On the downside, dental PPO generally do have higher premiums for coverage. PPO is used very commonly by businesses to insure their employees with dental benefits. PPO can also be used by the individual or to cover whole families.

PPOs function under an organization which networks contracted dental professionals to the insurance carriers. The network of dentists who are contracted provide their services at lower, special rates for dental care. If the insured individual decides to choose a dental service provider which is not a part of the network, it is up to them, however, they will not benefit from as much savings, and have to pay alternative discounted rates. The lowest rates available will always come from the providers within the network.

Even with this popular flexibility, the PPO insurance plans do have limitations, as would any plan. Besides having higher premiums, there is an equally common issue of the long and tedious claiming procedures. Those insured typically have long waiting periods before receiving their reimbursement. Under the PPO dental insurance plan, individuals are also required to pay their deductibles before receiving their reimbursement. Also considered a drawback is that most of the PPO dental plans only offer to pay a portion of the costs, and the individual is required to cover the rest out-of-pocket. However, this remains the most popular form of dental coverage because it gives them the most freedom when it comes to choosing who they want to have working on them.
